A grainline is simply the direction of fabric’s woven strands which can be seen running parallel to one another horizontally across a piece of fabric.

This ensures all edges match up neatly for an attractive finish.

Check for the different grainlines in sewing when you lay out your pattern before pinning and cutting.
Typically, the fabric grainline is a straight line on the pattern piece that resembles an arrow. Along the arrow, it may say to place on the fabric’s straight grain, or this may simply be understood.

This dependson the way that the fabric was woven. As welll as the type of fabric you choose for your project.
The most common type is the lengthwise grainline, which runs parallel to the selvage edges of the fabric.
There are also crosswise and bias grainlines these however run at an angle to these two directions.
These distinctions on the other hand, affect how you cut your pattern pieces for sewing clothing.
That is why it is important to know what type you’re dealing with!
