Sewing proffessional fitting cloths starts with having proper body measurements. This is my first dress making tip.Without an accurate body measurement ,it is virtually impossible to end up with fitting garments.

TIPS TO SEW PROFFESSIONAL LOOKING CLOTHS

Always use the dressmaker measuring tape to take your body measurements.

Wear only tight fitting undergarment while measuring. keep your tape measure flat to your body.As a beginner, you might have to take your measurements yourself.

This may be difficult at first

A simple trick I use is to stand in front of a wall mirror.I also use elastic bands to mark my body land marks. Here is a practical video on how to take proper body measurements

Watching the video, will help you take your body measurements alone. The video also contains sewing formulars you can use.this are for back measurements you may not be able to take yourself.

KNOW YOUR BODY TYPE OR SHAPE.

Knowing your body type or shape plays an important roll in selecting pattern styles that will work for you.A particular style can sit well on one body shape but look terrible on another.

Before you think of selecting a pattern style, first know your body type.

Research studies confirm that body shapes can be classified into 5 categories.

BUY OR MAKE YOUR PATTERNS TO GET PROFFESSIONAL LOOKING CLOTHS

If you are learning dress making as a beginner, this may sound complicated to you.

But believe me it is not.

All you need is the commitment and willingness to learn. First learn what pattern tools are and there uses. Then try your hands on making your body blocks using your measurements. Or you can use commercial costom body blocks.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATERIAL TO SUIT YOUR STYLE

Do you want to know the secret to finding the perfect fabric for your dress style? Well, it’s actually very simple!

There are so many fabric options out there for making your own proffessional fitting cloth. Choosing the right one can be difficult, and it’s important to know what type of style you’re going for before you start sewing.

If you want a simple cotton sundress, then choose a lightweight cotton or linen.

If you want something more formal with an evening gown feel, try silk chiffon or satin. To get started on designing your proffessional looking dress in no time at all, check out my handy guide!

CHOOSE THE RIGHT INTERFACING FOR YOUR PROJECT

For a long time I’ve been sewing and designing clothes, but it wasn’t until recently that I really started paying attention to the different types of interfacing.

If you’re not sure what kind of interfacing is best for your project or how to use it, this blog post will help!

This is one of the most important dressmaking tips on how to sew proffessional looking cloths

IRON YOUR INTERFACING BEFOR CUTTING

Ironing your interface before cutting your fabric will save you time and money.

After ironing, the interfacing will be flat and smooth so it won’t fray as easily. You’ll also be able to measure with ease instead of having to try and cut around a wrinkled piece of fabric.

Ironing is easy! And it is an important step in the sewing process that will help you sew proffessional looking cloths.

The video below is very clear on how to use and iron interfacing correctly

USE SHARP CUTTING TOOLS TO CUT YOUR FABRIC

Mini Electric Rotary Cutter for Fabric,

Poafamx Electric Rotary Fabric Cutter Leather Scissors

Rotary Cutter Set Black – Quilting Kit incl.

Do you use a cutting tool to cut your fabric? If not, then this blog post is for you! In the past I have used scissors and had mixed results.

Scissors are great for small cuts but they don’t always produce a clean cut.

There have been times when my fabric ends up looking more like confetti than a nice even strip of fabric. This inevitably means that sewing becomes more difficult as well- especially if I’m working with something delicate or complicated.

Over time,I have discovered some new tools designed specifically for cutting fabric: rotary blades and mat cutting rulers. These tools give you clean cutts and helps you make proffessional looking cloths.

If you dont know how to use rotary cutters,Here is a short video below on how to do this properly

CUT YOUR FABRIC ACCORDING TO THE GRAINLINE

Understanding grainlines is something that I did not pay attension to.Especially in my early sewing days.

This is the very first thing you think off before cutting your pattern.

If you want to understand what grainlines in sewing are, check out this blog post

USE THE RIGHT THREAD FOR THE RIGHT MATERIAL

The thread you use for your sewing plays a very importanr role in the way you dress turns out.

Before now, I only buy threads that match the colour of my fabric.

But recently,I realised that there is more to choosing the right thread than the colour.

Understanding the different types of sewing thread and their uses, will guide you in choosing the right thread for your project.

If you are a fashion designer, an aspiring blogger, or just the average mum who wants to look good in your clothes then ironing your fabric before cutting it is probably not something that has crossed your mind.

PROPER FINISHING FOR PROFFESSIONAL LOOKING CLOTHS.

Every sewist has a different way of finishing their projects. Some prefer to leave raw edges, some like to use bias tape and others will turn the hem under for a clean finish.

Some use interlocking machines or the serger.

If you are a beginner, the serger might be expensive. This youtube video byEvelyn Wood shows you how to do perfect seam finishing without a serger .
